Luxury stargazing at The Farmhouse (Moon Event)

Friday 12th April

The Farmhouse is blessed with beautiful night skies and we are delighted to offer our ‘Gaze & Graze’ evening combining a sumptuous dinner from our barn with an evening with your very own expert astronomer, Richard Darn.

It’s perfect for just sitting back and enjoying one of Mother Nature’s finest shows.
During this event you will get to study our nearest celestial neighbour in all its glory. The moon will be in the ideal position and phase to view incredible mountains ranges and deep craters. Annual Steam Gala 2018

Celebrate the Q6 & RAF Centenary with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway!

This weekend is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s (NYMR) Annual Steam Gala, to be celebrated with a combination of guest locomotives and home fleet engines in steam. This year’s Steam Gala promises to be unlike any other as the railway celebrates 100 years of the railway’s Q6 locomotives along with the 100th anniversary of the RAF and Goathland will be at the heart of it all!

The steam engines are such a part of everyday in Goathland that it is easy to forget just how lucky we are having the drama of by-gone days flying past but they really are stunning, cutting through the equally beautiful and dramatic landscape that surrounds us here in the North York Moors National Park.

Find out more about this years #SteamGala and the visiting locomotives at the #yorkshiresteamrailway

Astronomer-led Stargazing and good food!

AN EVENING UNDER THE STARS

The Farmhouse is blessed with beautiful dark night skies and we are delighted to offer our guests ‘gaze & stay’ packages combining a sumptuous dinner with a private two-hour star gazing session with your very own expert astronomer.

The North York Moors National Park is one of England’s darkest areas and spectacular on clear nights!  You will see up to 2,000 stars and the majestic Milky Way arching over-head together with star clusters, galaxies and spectacular shooting stars. It’s perfect for just sitting back and enjoying one of Mother Nature’s finest shows.

Wrap up warm and enjoy stunning views!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Our star packages are only open to guests staying at The Farmhouse (min. stay one night) or in one of the estates cottages (min. 3 night stay) *

WRAP UP WARM

Weather permitting, we will endeavour to provide a wonderfully warming meal, alfresco, with the comfort of fire pits, sheepskins and blankets. However, the star gazing is done over 2 hours and you will need plenty of layers.

CLOUDS CAN GET IN THE WAY

We work with a number of astronomers and whilst hoping for clear skies the UK can sometimes have other ideas. Should your evening in question be affected, don’t despair – our partners offer immersive star domes so you can enjoy space related films and a virtual tour of the night sky. If for reasons outside of our control the star gazing had to be

cancelled – we would of course offer a full refund of the ‘Star Gazing’ package including the astronomer-led dark sky event and food as provided by The Farmhouse. Please note that the separate cost of accommodation should be honoured.

The night skies are only at their best between Autumn and Spring and so there is no star gazing available from the start of May to the end of September.

Star gazing is subject to the availability of the astronomers with whom we work.

Unfortunately, we are only able to offer private star gazing packages for parties of 2 people or more.

There is a strict 2-week cancellation policy

COST

For Couples – £105 per person

For Star Parties (groups of 4 or more) – £65 per person

All our star gazing evenings include Canapes, a hearty meal with wine and one of our delicious Farmhouse Pudds, finished with homemade marshmallows, hot chocolate and your favourite tipple.

*Like the sound of our Star Packages but not a guest at The Farmhouse? Please do get in touch and we’d be delighted to discuss your requirements. Whether a romantic surprise or a fun evening with friends we can create a wonderful evening of food and dark skies

Wild Plum Frangipane

the farmhouse wild plum frangipane

You Can’t Beat a Good Frangipane

Over on Instagram I promised that we would post the recipe for the wild plum frangipane from The Farmhouse Kitchen – well – here it is!

Sweet Pastry

4oz (100g) plain flour

2oz (50g) softened butter

2oz (50g) caster sugar

2 egg yolks

For the Wild Plums

Lightly cook the plums in a sugar syrup with star anise

For the Frangipane

2oz (50g) softened butter

2oz (50g)  caster sugar

1 egg (beaten)

20z (50g) ground almonds

1/2 oz (15g) plain flour

a few drops of almond extract

2oz (50g) flaked almonds

For the sweet pastry – rub the butter into the flour, stir in the sugar and then add the yolks and mix to form a dough and knead till smooth – rest in the fridge for 30mins.

Pre-heat the oven to 190*c

Roll out the sweet pastry and line a loose tart tin – prick  – chill while you make the filling (the sweet pastry – not you!)

For the frangipane – beat together the butter and sugar till light and fluffy, gradually beat in the egg and stir in the ground almonds, flour and almond extract.

Smear a good dollop of wild plum jam on the base of the tart and then fill the tart case with the mixture and bake for about 20 -25 minutes until golden.

Any spare plums can be placed atop the tart for a very plum wild plum frangipane!
